In Lauscha in the Thuringian Forest, a poor glassblower invented the first glass Christmas tree ornament in 1847. He had no money to buy his children nuts and apples as gifts. Therefore, he blew the fruits out of glass and painted them colorfully. This is how the tradition of hanging glass balls in many colors and decorations on the Christmas tree was born. In the following decades, mouth-blown Christmas tree balls from Thuringia became world famous. Our manufactory for Christmas tree decorations, the Christmas station Sitzendorf, is located in the Schwarza valley in the Thuringian Forest, not far from Lauscha.

This is how a glass Christmas tree ornament is made

A lot of experience and care are required for the production of glass tree ornaments. In an 800-degree gas flame, the glassblower carefully blows a small piece of glass into the desired shape. This is followed by dyeing or painting. Other types of finishing include decorating with glitter dust, ice varnish or decorative wires. The popular gold and silver Christmas tree balls are also made of glass.

Origin and meaning of Christmas balls

The bauble was a symbol of perfection and the divine in all cultures. However, the ball as a Christmas tree decoration had a simpler model, namely the apple. At Christmas, small delicacies such as nuts, apples and preserved dried fruits used to be given as gifts.
